When we were planning our 2020 motorcycle rides and expeditions, we needed to find a tent that offered durability, stability, and plenty of space for camera equipment, cables, laptops, other equipment and for drying layers of wet motorcycle clothing overnight. Something we could eat and work inside, also for longer durations. After testing 8-9 different tents in different countries and conditions, the Heimplanet Cave tent became our first choice for the upcoming expeditions.
One of the primary reasons we chose the Heimplanet Cave tent was its unmistakable geodesic dome construction. This design provides exceptional stability, with ten crossing points that ensure it can withstand all types of weather conditions.
During one of our trips, we encountered a fairly rough, night-long thunderstorm with high winds, cloudbursts, and seemingly-endless waves of heavy rain and hailstones at different points throughout the night. The Cave tent stood its ground, keeping us and our equipment dry and secure. The noise from the storm was intense, and while earplugs helped, sleeping was nearly impossible. However, the tent's performance in such extreme conditions was nothing short of impressive. When we crawled out of our tents the next morning, the motorcycles were clean and wet, the ground was like the floor of a swamp, but everything that was inside the tents was still dry, including our clothing. Decision was made.
In terms of setup, the Heimplanet Cave tent is actually quite user-friendly. It looks complicated, but it isn't. Its inflatable Diamond Grid (IDG) system allows for quick and intuitive setting up. All you need is a pump of some type (available from Heimplanet), and the entire tent can be set up in less than a minute. This efficiency is crucial when arriving at a campsite late in the day or needing to pack up quickly in the morning. The color-coded parts also simplify the initial assembly, ensuring that even first-time users can pitch the tent without any hassle. Great if you're tanding in the rain and need to get inside and dry off, as soon as possible.
The interior space of the Cave tent is another strong feature. Even though we were one person per tent, it can comfortably accommodate 2-3 people if necessary, with enough room to store all our camera gear and other equipment safely out of the elements. This is particularly important, as we often need to work on footage captured during the day. The multiple storage pockets along the sides are useful for organizing smaller items, and there is even enough space to set up a drying line for wet clothes. This setup ensures that you can get a good night's sleep while your gear dries on the other side of the tent.
While the Cave tent is not the lightest option available for motorcycle expeditions, and it's possible to find smaller tents that back down to half the weight, this is a minor inconvenience compared to the many other benefits it offers. The tent's weatherproof materials and durable construction provide peace of mind, knowing that it can handle whatever nature throws at it, apart from mudslides and avalanches. This reliability is essential for longer trips and expeditions where encountering all kinds of weather conditions and challenges is inevitable.
The Heimplanet Cave tent has proven to be an wise choice for our motorcycle adventures. Its strong construction, large interior and ease of setup make it a fast, reliable and practical option. Whether you're hiding from hurricanes or just need a dependable shelter, The Cave consistently delivers. For anyone looking for a tent that can withstand extreme weather and provide comfort and convenience on the road, the Heimplanet Cave tent is a good investment and will save you a lot of hotel overnights over the years.
