KTM - Ready To Race

The trip was planned as a shakedown ride to test our equipment, processes, and decide which type of motorcycles we should bring on the next expedition from Austria to China or Ireland to Japan. After researching many different brands and motorcycles, we narrowed it down to either the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S or the KTM 790 Adventure R (2019 models).

We decided on KTM Adventure Motorcycles because of their 'Ready To Race' mindset, and the great combination of cutting-edge technologies and an extremely offroad-capable machine. We need something we can rely on to get us both into and out of the many different types of landscapes and other strange situations that we encounter on our long rides and overland expeditions.

For the test ride, we figured out a good route including backroads and forest trails through a lot of southern, western and northern Denmark including some well-known museums and landmarks. We tested both motorcycles in a variety of situations and scenarios, discovering their many strengths and very few limitations over the course of the 5-day shakedown ride.

Around day 4, we were still undecided as to which of these great machines to order 2 of, but we were both leaning towards the 1290 Super Adventure S, and by day 5 we were fully decided - 2 x 1290's for the Ireland to China expedition in 2020.

April 2020 rolled around, and Corona had other plans, and started shutting down the borders between Europe and China, so we were forced to cancel the trip at the very last minute. Maybe some other time?

A lot of new tech crammed into these motorcycles

The 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure with the 1,301cc and 23L fuel tank capacity are equipped with a front-mounted Mid-Range Radar (MRR) sensor array, for radar-based rider-assistance. This means the motorcycle can automatically synchronise with traffic speed, and provide warnings about any approaching dangers in front or from behind, and adjust to other obstacles on the road. This enhances our reaction time, and helps us avoid any unwanted interactions with other vehicles on the road, in the desert, or on mountain trails.

Add all this to the other very useful features for long-distance expedition riding, such as ABS, adaptive suspension, adaptive cruise control, smartphone integration, turn-by-turn navigation, cornering traction control, the many useful ride modes, and the large TFT display that only shows the information you actually need, greatly reduces the number of external and peripheral gadgets and devices we need to attach to the motorcycle - and then relate to - on the road.

Some of the museums we visited included:

Tirpitz Museum

Situated at one of the biggest gun positions in the Atlantic Wall during World War II, the Tirpitz Battery was never finished, as the war came to an end before the construction was complete. Through two decades this ruined bunker was a popular museum but in 2017 it was replaced by a new museum containing four large sections with separate exhibitions. The building is camouflaged as part of the landscape with the bearing parts of the construction hidden under the sand.

The new museum contains a variety of different experiences and exhibitions: from dramatic time travel from the Ice Age to today, the smugglers at Ho Bugt and the disaster in Blåvand. You will also see 40 million year old insects trapped in capsules of amber. Meet the people who constructed Hitler’s Atlantic Wall and get an impression of the soldiers and civilians who lived in the western part of Jutland during the Second World War. Arm yourself with a flashlight and discover the great stories hidden inside the concrete fortress.

Bunkermuseum Hanstholm

Bunkermuseum Hanstholm was originally a large coastal fortification built by Nazi Germany during World War II as part of the Atlantic Wall, which ran fro northern Norway to southern Spain. Situated in Thy National Park, the remains of the fortress is now a World War II museum that is definitely worth a visit.

Moesgaard Museum

Prehistory presented innovatively in a breathtaking architectural setting makes for a world-class museum experience. The past comes alive and visitors get a better understanding of our history and how we arrived at the present. Scenography, storytelling and extensive research all come together in the exhibitions which appeal to visitors of all ages and across generations. Moesgaard Museum is an impressive attraction not only because of the architectural design of the museum and the exhibitions, but also because of its location in the beautiful surroundings overlooking the forest and the sea.
