In the middle of Vordingborg is the old castle area, which is a beautiful and historic place where you can enjoy the view over the water, the green areas laced with the atmosphere of deep history. It was here that Denmarks first constitution was ratified, and from here the Vendertogts departed under the leadership of Bishop Absalon. And it was here the kingdom of Denmark gathered after years of division under Valdemar the Great (1157-1182).

Valdemar II (Valdemar the victorious) similarly used the castle for expansion into the Baltic, and in 1241 it was where he created the reformed legal system, the Law of Jutland. This was Denmarks most important castle in the 14th century, and several kings have had their residence here.

Legend has it that Valdemar Atterdag used the symbolism of the 9 castle towers to taunt the Hanseatic League. The castle was the birthplace of Queen Margaret I of Denmark, daughter of Valdemar IV, in 1353. On the way to Ebeltoft, you should ride through the lush regions of Silkeborg and Skanderborg. The landscape is dominated by big lakes, forests and some of the highest points in Denmark, including Himmelbjerget. During World War II the German Wehrmacht had its Jutlandic headquarter at Silkeborg Bad, the former sanatorium known for its curative spring waters. It is now a municipal art centre, where it is possible to visit the wartime bunkers in the grounds. Silkeborg was the home city of COBRA painter Asger Jorn, and has in addition to the above mentioned Silkeborg Bad art centre another art museum, the Museum Jorn, Silkeborg with its large Asger Jorn collection. ETR // STAGE 27 // 252 KM // EBELTOFT ⬌ HANSTHOLM

Take a ride up to Skagen and the northernmost point of Denmark, the headland at Grenen, where you can stand with one foot in The Kattegat Sea, and one foot in The Skaggerak. This makes for turbulent seas, and strandings, beachings and shipwrecks are common. The frequent shipping losses and the strategic location as the gateway to the Baltic led to Skagen being the site of one of Denmarks earliest lighthouses, the Vippefyr, constructed in the 17th century. A reconstruction of the lighthouse is located to the north of the town of Skagen. Take the west coast route southwards and visit the bunkers at Løkken, or cut over to the city of Aalborg.

Whichever direction you take to Hanstholm, visit the bunkers at Vigsø before you arrive at Bunkermuseum Hanstholm, a large sea fortress, constructed by the occupying German military during World War II. The fortress was part of The Atlantic Wall and its main purpose was to seal off the entrance to Skagerrak together with the Vara fortress in Kristiansand, in southern Norway, with extensive marine minefields in the Skagerrak. The fortress had a wide range of artillery, ranging from medium-sized 17cm guns up to four massive 38cm S.K.C/34 guns, weighing 110 tonnes each. The 38cm guns were similar to the ones fitted to the Bismarck class battleships and had been intended for Gneisenau. However, after Gneisenau was damaged in a bombing raid, a decision was made not to fit the guns to the ship, but to use them in stationary fortresses instead.

28

HANSTHOLM - ESBJERG

ETR // STAGE 28 // 228 KM // HANSTHOLM ⬌ ESBJERG

Heading south along the wide beaches lining the Danish west coast, visit the bunkers at Thybørøn before you arrive at Ringkøbing. Already in the 11th century, a church was built in the small village of Rindum, which is even older, with proof of settlements dating back to the 6th century.

From there, head south and visit Tirpiz Bunker Museum & Tirpitz Battery. The old Tirpitz Bunker contains the story of Hitlers gigantic bunker project: the Atlantic Wall. In August 1944, the German occupying power set about building the huge Tirpitz Battery near Blåvand. The two huge gun bunkers were part of the Atlantic Wall and were intended to defend the entrance to Esbjerg, but the war ended before the bunkers were completed. Since then they have represented cold evidence of the war in the very heart of the magnificent dune landscape.

At Sædding Strand north of Esbjerg you will find Man by the Sea, a sculpture by Svend Wiig Hansen, which was created in connection with the 100th anniversary of Esbjerg in 1994 and has since become an international landmark for the city. The sculpture rises 9 meters into the air and can be seen from up to 10 kilometers out in the ocean, and depicts four white men in a row looking out over the sea, similar to the monoliths on Easter Island.

29

ESBJERG - FLENSBURG

ETR // STAGE 29 // 225 KM // ESBJERG ⬌ FLENSBURG

The region around Ribe and Tønder hosts a wealth of historical experiences, such as Løgumkloster Church, Højer Mill or the historic site where the Golden Horns were found. On the island of Rømø, climb The Marsh Tower for spectacular views. Ribe is Denmarks oldest town and the atmosphere in the medieval city has a history that stretches back to around 710 AD. From here, trading between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe began, followed by the spreading of Christianity, with Ribe maintaining its greatness well into the Middle Ages. Vikings departed from Ribe in their wooden ships and set course for other parts of Europe to trade, and to spread terror.

Wadden Sea National Park is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Tønder was granted Hanseatic port privileges in 1243, and is Denmarks oldest market town. In 1532, the town was hit by severe flooding, with the water reaching 1.8 metres high in St Laurents church, 5.3 metres above normal levels.

Between 1915 and 1918, a base for Zeppelin airships was operated in Tønder by the German Navy. The former site now houses a museum, the Zeppelin and Garrison Museum Tønder. An aircraft hangar from World War 1 survives, as do some of the other buildings from back then, but only the foundations remain of the large Airship hangars constructed to house the Zeppelins. Crossing the border into Germany, the region along Flensburg Fjord offers an exciting palette of cultural locations, events and programs, and some cosy restaurants, original pubs, bars and a handful of clubs await in the nightlife of Flensburg.
